First Night Leave
Full Form of FNL
What is FNL?
First Night Leave (FNL) is a special type of leave granted to newly appointed or posted personnel in the Indian armed forces, paramilitary, and police organizations. It is typically allowed on the very first night of reporting to a new unit or station, enabling the individual to complete personal formalities such as arranging accommodation, meeting family, or settling into the new environment. This leave is a one-time privilege, usually limited to a single night, though its duration may vary based on unit discretion and operational requirements. FNL recognizes the practical challenges faced by personnel during postings and helps in smoother integration into the unit. In India, this leave is widely referenced in service regulations, standing orders, and personnel memoranda. It is particularly relevant for candidates preparing for defence examinations such as the Combined Defence Services (CDS), National Defence Academy (NDA), Army Cadet College (ACC), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) exams, where knowledge of leave categories is tested in the general awareness or service knowledge sections. Understanding FNL along with other leave types is essential for officers and soldiers to manage their entitlements effectively.
