Financial Market Infrastructure
Full Form of FMI
What is FMI?
Financial Market Infrastructure (FMI) refers to the multilateral systems and institutional arrangements that facilitate the clearing, settlement, and recording of monetary and other financial transactions. In India, FMIs are critical for the smooth functioning of the banking and capital markets. They include payment systems like RTGS and NEFT, securities settlement systems such as those operated by the Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL), and central securities depositories like NSDL and CDSL. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) oversees and regulates these infrastructures to ensure financial stability, risk mitigation, and efficiency. FMIs are used daily by banks, stock exchanges, and financial institutions to process millions of transactions. Understanding FMI is important for candidates preparing for banking exams like RBI Grade B, SEBI, and NABARD, as questions often cover the role of FMIs in systemic risk management and payment system reforms.
