Foundational Literacy and Numeracy
Full Form of FLN
What is FLN?
FLN stands for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, a cornerstone of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It refers to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic that every child must acquire by the end of Grade 3. The Indian government launched the NIPUN Bharat Mission (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy) in 2021 as a national priority to ensure universal FLN. This mission targets over 5 crore children in primary schools across India, focusing on activity-based learning, teacher training, and continuous assessment. FLN is used by the Ministry of Education, state education departments, and schools to design curriculum frameworks and remedial programs. In exams like CTET, UPTET, and other teaching eligibility tests, FLN is a frequent topic under child development and pedagogy. The emphasis on FLN aims to prevent early learning gaps that hinder later academic success. By 2026-27, every Indian child is expected to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy, making FLN a critical metric in school education reforms.
