Female Health Worker
Full Form of FHW
What is FHW?
FHW stands for Female Health Worker, a frontline healthcare professional in India’s public health system. FHWs are primarily deployed in rural and remote areas under the National Health Mission (NHM). They are responsible for providing essential maternal and child health services, including antenatal care, postnatal care, immunization, family planning services, and health education. FHWs are often stationed at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) or sub-centres and work closely with Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). The term FHW is used officially in many state government recruitment notifications and health department documents. Their role is critical in achieving the health goals of the country, such as reducing maternal and infant mortality. In competitive exams like UPSC, state PCS, or nursing exams, questions about the duties of FHWs, their training requirements, and their place in the NHM framework are common. FHWs must be female and typically hold a nursing or midwifery diploma. The position is a cornerstone of India's primary healthcare delivery, ensuring last-mile access to health services for women and children.
