Focus Group Discussion
Full Form of FGD
What is FGD?
A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is a qualitative research method where a small, diverse group of people (typically 6–12 participants) engage in a guided conversation led by a moderator to explore perceptions, opinions, and attitudes about a specific topic, product, service, or idea. In India, FGDs are widely used across market research, social sciences, policy evaluation, and educational assessments to gather in-depth insights from target populations—ranging from rural farmers evaluating agricultural schemes to urban youth testing new digital products. These discussions are held in comfortable, neutral settings, often lasting 60–90 minutes, and are recorded for analysis. They serve as a powerful tool for understanding cultural nuances, behavioral patterns, and unmet needs. For students and professionals in marketing, sociology, or public health, knowing how to design and moderate FGDs is essential for data collection. Questions on FGD methodology frequently appear in competitive exams like UGC NET, CAT, and civil services interviews, particularly in research aptitude and management papers.
