What is FFP?
The Food Fortification Program (FFP) is a government-led initiative in India aimed at addressing widespread micronutrient deficiencies by adding essential vitamins and minerals to commonly consumed foods such as wheat flour, rice, salt, and edible oil. Launched under the broader National Nutrition Mission (POSHAN Abhiyaan), the program focuses on reducing anaemia, iodine deficiency, and other hidden hunger issues, particularly among women and children. It is implemented in collaboration with state governments, food industries, and public distribution systems to ensure fortified foods reach vulnerable populations. The FFP is a key component of India's strategy to achieve nutritional security and aligns with global targets for ending malnutrition. It is referenced in exams like the UPSC, state civil services, and public health examinations, where questions on government schemes and nutrition policies often draw on the FFP's objectives, implementation mechanisms, and its role in the Sustainable Development Goals. The program also involves labelling and quality checks to maintain standards under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
