Foreign Educational Institution
Full Form of FEI
What is FEI?
A Foreign Educational Institution (FEI) is an overseas university or college that seeks to establish a physical presence in India under the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC (Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2022, allow top-ranked foreign universities to set up campuses in India, offer their own degrees, and set their own fee structures. This move aims to internationalize Indian higher education, reduce brain drain, and provide Indian students with global-standard qualifications without leaving the country. The term is used primarily in policy documents, admission discussions, and news articles about cross-border education. For students appearing in competitive exams like UGC NET or CTET, understanding the FEI framework is relevant as it covers contemporary developments in education policy. FEIs are distinct from twinning programs or study-abroad arrangements because they involve a full-fledged campus with the same curriculum and faculty as the parent institution. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages international collaborations. As of 2024, several prestigious universities, including from the UK and Australia, have expressed interest in setting up FEI campuses, making it a trending topic among aspirants.
