Faculty Development Network
Full Form of FDN
What is FDN?
Faculty Development Network (FDN) is an institutional framework designed to enhance the teaching, research, and professional skills of educators in higher education institutions across India. It serves as a collaborative platform connecting universities, colleges, and training agencies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The FDN organizes workshops, seminars, and online courses to help faculty keep pace with evolving pedagogical methods, digital tools, and discipline-specific advancements. This network is widely used in central and state universities, deemed universities, and autonomous colleges, especially during orientation and refresher programmes. For students preparing for competitive exams like UGC-NET or CTET, understanding the FDN is relevant because it reflects the institutional support available for teacher development, which appears in education-related sections of these exams. The FDN promotes continuous learning among teachers, thereby indirectly improving the quality of education for students across the country. Its role has expanded after the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises faculty upskilling as a cornerstone of higher education reform. The network operates both at the national level through bodies like the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, and at local levels through institutional faculty development cells.
