What is FBW?
Fly-by-Wire (FBW) is a flight control system that replaces manual mechanical linkages between a pilot's controls and the aircraft's control surfaces with an electronic interface. Sensors detect pilot inputs, which are processed by flight control computers and transmitted via electrical wires to hydraulic or electric actuators that move the control surfaces. FBW improves aircraft performance, reduces weight, and enhances safety by automatically stabilizing the aircraft and preventing dangerous maneuvers. In India, FBW technology is critical in indigenous fighter jets like the Tejas, developed by HAL and DRDO, and is a key topic in aerospace engineering curricula. It is also used in commercial airliners and UAVs. Understanding FBW is important for GATE Aerospace and CSE exams, as questions often involve its advantages, redundancy, and integration with avionics. The system was first introduced in the 1960s but became standard in modern aircraft due to its reliability and ability to implement advanced flight control laws.
