What is FBR?
A Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) is a type of nuclear reactor that uses fast neutrons to generate fission energy while producing more fissile material than it consumes. In the Indian context, FBRs are central to the country's three-stage nuclear power program, which aims to utilize abundant thorium reserves for long-term energy security. India's flagship FBR is the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, developed by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). FBRs operate with a plutonium-uranium mixed oxide fuel and a liquid sodium coolant. They are designed to breed plutonium-239 from uranium-238, effectively multiplying fuel availability.
