Atomic Energy Commission
Full Form of AEC
What is AEC?
The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) of India is the apex policy-making body for the country's nuclear energy and research programs. Established in 1948 under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the AEC oversees the development of nuclear power, medical applications of radiation, and advanced scientific research. It formulates policies for the entire nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to waste management, and coordinates the operations of key institutions like BARC, IGCAR, and NPCIL. The AEC plays a critical role in ensuring energy security, supporting India's strategic nuclear deterrent, and promoting peaceful uses of atomic technology. In academic and competitive exam contexts—especially for UPSC, SSC, and engineering entrance tests—knowledge of the AEC is essential for questions on Indian governance, energy policy, and science and technology. The commission meets regularly to approve new projects, review safety protocols, and guide research priorities, making it a central pillar of India's scientific infrastructure.
