Explosive Remnants of War
Full Form of ERW
What is ERW?
Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) refer to unexploded ordnance (UXO) and abandoned explosive ordnance (AXO) left behind after armed conflicts. In the Indian context, ERW is a significant concern in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast states, and along international borders where past conflicts have left behind mines, shells, and bombs. These remnants pose a long-term threat to civilian lives, livestock, and agricultural activities, often hindering development and reconstruction. The Indian Army, along with demining agencies, conducts systematic clearance operations using metal detectors, sniffer dogs, and controlled detonations. Awareness campaigns educate local communities about the dangers of tampering with suspicious objects. ERW management is a crucial component of post-conflict recovery and is studied in defence examinations like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and National Defence Academy (NDA) tests, where candidates may be asked about mine risk education and explosive ordnance disposal.
