Electoral Roll
Full Form of ERL
What is ERL?
The Electoral Roll (ERL) is the official, legally mandated list of all eligible voters in a given constituency in India. Maintained by the Election Commission of India (ECI) under Article 326 of the Constitution, the ERL serves as the foundational document for conducting free and fair elections at the national, state, and local levels. It is a living document updated annually through a Summary Revision process and continuously via special campaigns, additions, deletions, and corrections. The ERL determines who can cast a ballot in parliamentary, assembly, and local body elections. It is widely used by polling officers, political parties, and citizens during election preparation and voting day. The ERL is available online on the ECI website and offline at designated centers. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, understanding the ERL's constitutional basis, revision procedure, and role in ensuring universal adult suffrage is a high-weightage topic in polity and governance sections.
