Earthquake Zone
Full Form of EQZ
What is EQZ?
EQZ stands for Earthquake Zone, a classification system used in India to denote regions based on seismic hazard levels. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has divided the country into four seismic zones – II, III, IV, and V – with Zone V being the most seismically active. This zoning is critical for planning and constructing buildings, bridges, and infrastructure to ensure resilience against earthquakes. The EQZ system is widely used by civil engineers, architects, urban planners, and disaster management authorities in India. It is applied during site selection, structural design, and building code compliance under IS 1893 (Part 1). For students appearing in competitive exams like GATE, SSC JE, and state PSC civil engineering papers, understanding EQZ classifications is essential. The zones are mapped based on historical earthquake data, tectonic plate movements, and fault lines. For instance, the Himalayan region, Kutch in Gujarat, and the Northeast fall under the highest risk Zone V. The EQZ framework helps in prioritizing retrofitting, public awareness, and emergency preparedness. In exam contexts, questions often ask which zone a specific city belongs to or the minimum design parameters for each EQZ.
