Extended Project Qualification
Full Form of EPQ
What is EPQ?
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a standalone qualification offered primarily to students aged 16-19, allowing them to undertake an in-depth research project on a topic of their choice. In India, the EPQ is increasingly available in international schools following UK-based curricula such as Cambridge International and Edexcel. The project culminates in a written report, dissertation, artefact, or performance, accompanied by a reflective log and presentation. The EPQ develops critical thinking, independent research, time management, and academic writing skills, which are highly valued by Indian universities and overseas admissions committees. It is typically taken alongside A-levels and contributes UCAS tariff points for UK university applications. In the Indian context, students often choose locally relevant topics like climate change in the Himalayas, waste management in Indian cities, or historical analysis of the Partition. The qualification is especially beneficial for students aiming for competitive courses such as medicine, engineering, law, and economics, as it demonstrates self-discipline and a strong academic curiosity. While not directly applicable to Indian entrance exams like JEE or NEET, the skills gained help in personal interviews and essay-based components. The EPQ has gained traction among Indian students seeking admission to top global universities, making it a valuable addition to the academic portfolio.
