Electronic Program Guide
Full Form of EPG
What is EPG?
An Electronic Program Guide (EPG) is a digital on-screen guide that lists scheduled television programs for current and upcoming broadcasts. It enables viewers to browse channels, view show descriptions, set reminders, and record programs. In India, EPGs are widely used by Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators such as Tata Play, Dish TV, and Airtel Digital TV, as well as by digital cable and IPTV services. The EPG is typically accessed via the remote control and appears as an interactive grid on the TV screen, displaying channel names, program titles, start times, and brief synopses. It enhances the television viewing experience by allowing users to plan their watching schedule conveniently. EPG data is continuously updated by broadcasters and transmitted alongside the video signal. The technology is also integrated into smart TVs and over-the-top (OTT) platforms, making it relevant for both traditional and digital media consumption. For students of electronics, media studies, or computer science, understanding EPG systems provides insight into digital broadcasting standards and user interface design. In competitive exams like UGC NET or state-level assistant professor exams, questions on digital broadcasting technologies occasionally include the concept of an EPG.
