Set-Top Box
Full Form of STB
What is STB?
A Set-Top Box (STB) is an electronic device that connects to a television and decodes digital signals received from cable, satellite, or internet sources, allowing viewers to watch digital channels. The device became a household essential in India after the mandatory digitisation of cable TV in 2012-2017, which phased out analog broadcasting across the country. Today, nearly 200 million STBs are deployed across Indian homes, serving major operators like Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV, and various local cable networks. The device typically includes features like an electronic programme guide, parental locks, recording options, and conditional access through prepaid or postpaid subscription plans. STBs can be cable-based, DTH (Direct-to-Home) satellite-based, or IPTV-based, with newer hybrid models supporting OTT apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar. The Indian STB manufacturing industry, supported by government initiatives like Make in India, has become one of the largest globally, with major players including Sun Direct, Hathway, and Den Networks. For competitive exams, understanding STB technology is occasionally relevant under IT, electronics, and general awareness sections.
