What is EKE?
Ekalavya Khelo Evam (EKE) is a flagship sports initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, designed to identify and nurture athletic talent among tribal and rural youth in India. Named after the legendary archer Ekalavya, the program combines traditional sports training with modern coaching techniques to promote all-round development. Launched in 2021 as a sub-scheme of the larger Khelo India framework, EKE operates through Ekalavya Model Residential Schools and tribal-dominated districts. It aims to bridge the gap between academic education and sports excellence by providing scholarships, professional coaching, and access to state-of-the-art facilities. The program is particularly active in states like Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, where tribal communities are concentrated. Participants receive nutritional support, equipment, and exposure to national competitions. For competitive exams like UPSC, knowledge of EKE is useful in understanding government welfare schemes and sports policies. The initiative has already produced several medal winners at the national level, contributing to India's vision of becoming a global sports powerhouse. EKE also encourages community participation through local sports meets and cultural events, fostering a sense of pride and identity.
