Export Inspection Council
Full Form of EIC
What is EIC?
The Export Inspection Council (EIC) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Established under the Export (Quality Control and Inspection) Act, 1963, it is responsible for ensuring that Indian export goods meet the required quality and safety standards set by importing countries. The EIC operates through a network of field offices and laboratories across major ports and production centers, conducting pre-shipment inspection, certification, and testing of products such as food items, chemicals, textiles, and engineering goods. It plays a vital role in enhancing India’s export competitiveness by building trust in Indian products abroad. Exporters must often obtain EIC certification to access regulated markets like the European Union, the United States, and Japan. The council also advises the government on quality control policies and participates in international standard-setting forums. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or commerce-related entrance tests, understanding the EIC’s function is important because it frequently appears in questions on export promotion and quality assurance mechanisms in India.
