Equal Employment Opportunity
Full Form of EEO
What is EEO?
Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) is a principle that ensures all individuals have an equal chance to be hired, promoted, and treated fairly in the workplace without discrimination based on race, caste, religion, gender, age, disability, or other protected characteristics. In India, EEO is not just a corporate best practice but is also embedded in constitutional values and statutory frameworks such as the Constitution of India (Articles 14, 15, 16) and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. The concept gained prominence with the rise of multinational corporations and the implementation of diversity and inclusion policies. EEO is commonly referenced in HR policies, job advertisements, employee handbooks, and compliance reports of both public and private sector organisations. It is also a key topic in competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams where questions on fundamental rights and labour laws appear. While India does not have a single comprehensive EEO law, various statutes collectively promote non-discrimination. Organisations often have EEO officers or committees to handle complaints. The principle also extends to preventing harassment and ensuring reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities. Understanding EEO is essential for HR professionals, law students, and civil services aspirants.
