Election Duty Leave
Full Form of EDL
What is EDL?
Election Duty Leave (EDL) is a special type of leave granted to government employees in India who are assigned official election duties by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This leave is applicable during Lok Sabha, State Assembly, or local body elections, covering roles such as polling officers, presiding officers, and sector magistrates. EDL ensures that employees can fulfil their democratic responsibilities without losing their regular leave balance or salary. It is typically treated as duty and does not count against annual leave quotas like Earned Leave or Casual Leave. The central and state governments issue specific orders detailing eligibility, maximum duration, and remuneration during EDL. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions, questions often appear on leave rules, including EDL, as part of the General Awareness or Public Administration sections. Understanding EDL is also crucial for employees in public sector undertakings and banks who are frequently drafted for election work. The leave is designed to balance administrative needs with employee rights, reflecting India's commitment to free and fair elections. Its usage is widespread across all states and union territories during election periods, and the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions issues consolidated guidelines for its implementation.
