Electronic Banking Kiosk
Full Form of EBK
What is EBK?
An Electronic Banking Kiosk (EBK) is a self-service terminal deployed by Indian banks to provide basic banking services in locations where full-fledged branches are not feasible. These kiosks typically allow customers to perform cash deposits, cash withdrawals, account balance inquiries, mini statements, and sometimes even open new accounts using biometric or card-based authentication. In India, EBKs are strategically placed in rural and semi-urban areas, especially under government initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the Digital India campaign, to enhance financial inclusion. They operate on a secure centralised banking network and are maintained by public sector banks such as State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and others. EBKs are distinct from ATMs in that they often offer additional services like passbook printing and loan application submissions. Their role is critical in bridging the urban-rural banking divide, reducing the physical footfall in bank branches, and enabling 24/7 banking access. For banking exam aspirants, questions often focus on the role of EBKs in financial inclusion and the technology behind them. The widespread adoption of EBKs has also contributed to the growth of the cashless economy in India, particularly in areas with limited internet connectivity where offline-capable kiosks are preferred.
