Domestic Violence Act
Full Form of DVA
What is DVA?
The Domestic Violence Act (DVA), officially the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, is an Indian legislation aimed at protecting women from physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse within domestic relationships. Enacted to address the widespread issue of domestic violence, the Act provides a civil remedy for victims, allowing them to obtain protection orders, residence orders, and monetary relief. It applies to all women in India, including those in live-in relationships, and is enforced by magistrates and protection officers. The DVA is frequently referenced in legal proceedings, women’s rights advocacy, and social welfare programs. For competitive exams like UPSC, CLAT, and judiciary exams, the Act’s provisions, definitions, and landmark judgments are often tested. Its holistic approach—covering not just physical abuse but also verbal, emotional, and economic violence—makes it a cornerstone of gender justice in India.
