Domestic Violence
Full Form of DV
What is DV?
Domestic Violence (DV) refers to physical, emotional, sexual, economic, or psychological abuse perpetrated within a household, typically against women or vulnerable family members. In India, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA) provides a comprehensive legal framework to address such abuse, including protection orders, residence rights, and monetary relief. DV is commonly used in legal proceedings, police reports, and NGO interventions, particularly in family courts and women’s helplines. The term is also cited in social awareness campaigns and government schemes like One Stop Centres. For law and social work students in India, understanding DV is essential for exams on women's rights and criminal law. The Act empowers victims to seek immediate protection and prohibits dowry-related harassment. DV remains a critical social issue, and its legal recognition has strengthened the fight against gender-based violence in India.
