Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability
Full Form of DUS
What is DUS?
Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability (DUS) is a set of criteria used internationally to assess and register new plant varieties. In India, DUS testing is a mandatory requirement under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001. The test examines whether a candidate plant variety is clearly distinguishable from existing varieties (distinctness), shows consistent characteristics across individuals (uniformity), and remains unchanged over successive generations (stability). DUS trials are conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and other designated centers, typically over two to three growing seasons. The results are submitted to the PPV&FR Authority, which grants registration and plant breeders' rights. This system encourages innovation in crop breeding while protecting farmers' traditional varieties. DUS testing is critical for agricultural research, seed certification, and intellectual property management in India. For competitive exams like ICAR JRF, ARS, and state agriculture services, understanding DUS parameters is important as it links plant breeding with legal protection. The concept also appears in UPSC agriculture optional papers. DUS ensures quality and consistency in the seed industry, benefiting farmers, breeders, and the broader agricultural economy.
