Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding
Full Form of DUB
What is DUB?
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB) is a medical condition characterized by abnormal uterine bleeding that occurs in the absence of an organic pathology such as fibroids, polyps, or malignancy. It is primarily caused by hormonal imbalances, particularly involving estrogen and progesterone, leading to irregular ovulation or anovulation. DUB is a common gynecological issue in India, affecting women of reproductive age, especially during perimenarche and perimenopause. The condition is diagnosed through clinical history, pelvic examination, ultrasound, and sometimes endometrial biopsy to rule out other causes. Management typically involves hormonal therapies like oral contraceptives or progestins, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain, and in severe cases, surgical interventions such as endometrial ablation or hysterectomy. DUB is frequently tested in Indian medical entrance exams like NEET PG and AIIMS PG, where questions focus on its definition, differential diagnosis, and treatment algorithms. Awareness about DUB is growing in India due to increased focus on women's health and menstrual hygiene. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent complications like anemia and to improve quality of life.
