Disaster Risk Reduction
Full Form of DRR
What is DRR?
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a systematic approach to identifying, assessing, and reducing the risks of disasters. It aims to prevent new risks, reduce existing risks, and manage residual risks, thereby strengthening resilience and reducing the potential for loss of life, livelihoods, and property. In India, DRR is central to the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) framework, aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It is used across all states and union territories in policies, planning, and community training programs, especially for floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and landslides common in the Indian subcontinent. DRR is also integrated into school curricula and exam syllabi for civil services, disaster management courses, and environmental studies. The concept emphasizes proactive measures such as early warning systems, land-use planning, building codes, and public awareness campaigns, moving beyond reactive relief efforts. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, DRR is a key topic in governance and disaster management sections, often linked to sustainable development goals and climate change adaptation.
