Daily Wage Worker
Full Form of DQW
What is DQW?
A Daily Wage Worker (DQW) is a labourer who is employed on a day-to-day basis and receives payment at the end of each working day, without any formal job contract or long-term commitment from the employer. In India, DQWs form a significant part of the unorganised sector, including construction workers, agricultural labourers, rickshaw pullers, and domestic help. They are typically paid through cash or digital transfers, and their earnings fluctuate based on availability of work and demand. The term is widely used in government schemes, labour statistics, and policy discussions, particularly under programmes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which guarantees 100 days of wage employment per year to rural households. DQWs often lack social security benefits such as provident fund, insurance, or paid leave, making them vulnerable to economic shocks. In recent years, initiatives like the Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act, 2008 and the e-Shram portal have been introduced to register and provide welfare to DQWs. For competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and banking, understanding the challenges and legal protections for DQWs is relevant in topics of labour economics and social justice. The term is commonly used in policy reports, news articles on employment, and discussions around informal sector reforms.
