Depth of Knowledge
Full Form of DOK
What is DOK?
Depth of Knowledge (DOK) is a framework developed by Norman Webb to categorize the cognitive complexity of tasks and assessments. In Indian education, DOK is used primarily in curriculum design, exam paper setting, and competency-based learning reforms under the National Education Policy 2020. It defines four levels: recall and reproduction (DOK 1), skills and concepts (DOK 2), strategic thinking (DOK 3), and extended thinking (DOK 4). Teachers and exam boards like CBSE and NCERT apply DOK to ensure questions test deeper understanding rather than rote memorisation. This framework is especially relevant for subjects like mathematics, science, and social studies, where students are expected to analyse, evaluate, and create. DOK also guides question paper moderation for board exams and competitive tests such as JEE and NEET. Understanding DOK helps students prepare better by focusing on application and analysis rather than simple recall. The framework is gaining traction in Indian schools as part of the shift towards holistic and skill-based education. It is commonly discussed in teacher training workshops, educational policy documents, and syllabus revision committees.
