What is DAS?
Digital Addressable System (DAS) is a technology used in cable television networks to deliver digital signals to subscribers, allowing them to select and pay for individual channels or predefined packages. In India, DAS was introduced and mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as part of the digitization of cable TV services, aiming to bring transparency, address consumer grievances, and eliminate under-reporting of subscriber numbers. The system enables two-way communication between the cable operator and the set-top box, giving the operator control over which channels are accessed by each subscriber. DAS was rolled out in phases across Indian cities and towns, starting in 2012, with the final phase covering the entire country by 2015. It is widely used by cable TV networks, multi-system operators (MSOs), and local cable operators. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, DAS is an important topic under governance, media regulation, and infrastructure development.
