Caribbean Examinations Council
Full Form of CXC
What is CXC?
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is a regional examining body that develops and administers secondary and post-secondary qualifications across 16 Caribbean nations, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. Established in 1972, CXC offers the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), which are the equivalents of GCSE and A-Levels in the UK. In India, CXC qualifications are primarily relevant for students from the Caribbean diaspora who seek admission to Indian universities or professional courses. Indian institutions such as the University of Delhi and several engineering colleges have recognized CSEC and CAPE as valid entry credentials under equivalence guidelines issued by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The CXC curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and practical skills, and its syllabi are adapted to the Caribbean context. For Indian students, understanding CXC is useful when evaluating international transfer credits or when preparing for competitive exams that require recognition of overseas board marks. While not directly a part of the Indian education system, CXC plays a significant role in the academic mobility of Caribbean students in India and is sometimes referenced in policy documents on foreign degree equivalency.
