Criminal Use of Information
Full Form of CUI
What is CUI?
CUI, or Criminal Use of Information, refers to the unlawful exploitation of personal, financial, or sensitive data for criminal activities such as identity theft, phishing, fraud, or cyberstalking. In India, CUI is primarily addressed under the Information Technology Act, 2000, particularly Sections 66, 66C, and 66D, which criminalize identity theft, cheating by impersonation, and cyber fraud. The term is used by law enforcement agencies like the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and in legal proceedings to describe offenses where information is misused to cause harm or gain unauthorized benefit. With the rapid digitisation of services like Aadhaar, banking, and e-governance, CUI has become a significant concern, leading to stricter data protection norms under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Understanding CUI is crucial for law students, cybersecurity professionals, and candidates appearing for judicial services, UGC NET in forensic science, or cyber law certification exams, as it forms a core component of contemporary criminal jurisprudence.
