Cable Television
Full Form of CTV
What is CTV?
Cable Television (CTV) is a system of delivering television programming to consumers via coaxial or fiber-optic cables rather than through traditional antenna-based broadcasts. In India, CTV became widely popular from the 1990s onward, transforming the media landscape by offering dozens of channels, including regional language content, news, sports, and entertainment. It operates through a local cable operator (LCO) who receives signals from a satellite and distributes them to households. Today, CTV coexists with Direct-to-Home (DTH) and OTT platforms, but it remains a primary source of TV for millions of Indian families, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 governs its operations, mandating compulsory transmission of certain channels like Doordarshan. For students preparing for exams like UPSC, SSC, or banking, knowledge of CTV is relevant under mass communication topics, especially regarding regulatory frameworks and the digitization of cable TV (mandated in 2012). CTV has also enabled local advertising and niche content distribution, playing a key role in India's media pluralism.
