What is CSP?
A Customer Service Point (CSP) is a banking outlet operated by a business correspondent (BC) agent on behalf of a bank, primarily to extend banking services to rural and unbanked areas in India. Under the Reserve Bank of India's financial inclusion framework, CSPs act as the last-mile delivery channel, allowing customers to open accounts, deposit and withdraw cash, transfer funds, and avail government benefits like subsidies and pensions. Typically set up in villages using a laptop or micro-ATM, CSPs work in locations where a full-fledged bank branch is not viable. The agent earns commission for each transaction and is supervised by the sponsoring bank. CSPs are part of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) drive to achieve universal access to banking. In competitive exams like IBPS, RBI, and SBI, questions on CSPs often appear under banking awareness, asking about their role in financial inclusion, differences from regular branches, and the BC model. Timely and accurate transactions at a CSP help bridge the urban-rural banking divide and empower millions with formal financial services.
