Cerebrospinal Fluid
Full Form of CSF
What is CSF?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless bodily fluid found in the brain and spinal cord. It acts as a cushion to protect the central nervous system from mechanical shock, provides buoyancy to the brain, removes waste products, and helps maintain intracranial pressure. In India, CSF analysis is a critical diagnostic tool in neurology and infectious disease departments, especially for detecting meningitis, encephalitis, and multiple sclerosis. Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) is the standard procedure to collect CSF, performed in hospitals and clinics across the country. It is also used in research to study neurological disorders prevalent in India, such as tuberculous meningitis. For medical students and professionals preparing for exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and USMLE, understanding CSF composition, circulation, and clinical significance is essential. Abnormal CSF findings—such as elevated protein, low glucose, or presence of white blood cells—help differentiate between bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, guiding timely treatment. The fluid also plays a role in administering intrathecal chemotherapy and measuring intracranial pressure in conditions like hydrocephalus.
