Common Service Centre
Full Form of CSC
What is CSC?
Common Service Centres (CSCs) are physical facilities that deliver government e-services to rural and remote areas in India. Established under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) and later the Digital India initiative, CSCs act as access points for citizens to avail public services such as Aadhaar enrolment, bill payments, banking, insurance, birth/death certificates, land records, and educational courses. As of 2024, over 5 lakh CSCs operate across the country, often run by local entrepreneurs called Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs). These centres bridge the digital divide by providing last-mile connectivity and enabling self-employment. CSCs are also used for delivering welfare schemes like PM-KISAN and crop insurance. For students and competitive exams like UPSC, understanding CSCs is important for topics on e-governance, rural development, and Digital India. The platform has evolved to include services from private companies, making it a key driver of the digital economy in India.
