Virtual Learning Environment
Full Form of VLE
What is VLE?
A Virtual Learning Environment, commonly abbreviated as VLE, is a web-based digital platform that supports teaching, learning, and assessment by bringing together course content, communication tools, assessments, and student progress tracking in one accessible online space. In India, VLEs have become an integral part of schools, colleges, and professional training institutions, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online and hybrid learning models. Popular VLE platforms used across Indian educational institutions include Moodle, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams for Education, and open-source alternatives customised for state boards and central universities. The National Education Policy 2020 also strongly emphasises the use of VLEs to bridge the digital divide and extend quality learning to rural and remote areas. Teachers use VLEs to upload study materials, conduct live classes, assign homework, and grade submissions, while students access lessons, participate in discussion forums, and track their academic performance. VLE is also a frequently tested term in competitive exams such as CTET, UGC NET, KVS, and state teacher eligibility tests, where candidates are expected to understand educational technology terminology and its classroom applications.
