Chronic Renal Failure
Full Form of CRF
What is CRF?
Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), also known as chronic kidney disease (CKD) at an advanced stage, refers to the progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function over months or years. In India, CRF is a significant public health concern due to rising rates of diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle diseases. The condition is diagnosed through blood tests measuring serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Symptoms in early stages are often absent, but advanced CRF can lead to fatigue, fluid retention, electrolyte imbalances, and uremia. Management includes dietary modifications, medications to control blood pressure and blood sugar, and renal replacement therapies such as dialysis or kidney transplantation. The term is widely used in nephrology clinics, hospitals, and medical education across India. Examinations like NEET PG, USMLE, and nursing exams frequently test knowledge of CRF stages, complications, and treatment guidelines. The National Health Mission and state governments run awareness and dialysis support programs to address the burden. Early detection and lifestyle changes are critical to slow progression and improve outcomes for the millions of Indians affected.
