Common Proficiency Examination
Full Form of CPE
What is CPE?
The Common Proficiency Examination (CPE) was the entry-level test conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for students aspiring to pursue the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course. It served as the first step after completing 10+2 education, testing foundational knowledge in accounting, mercantile laws, general economics, and quantitative aptitude. The CPE was a key requirement for enrollment into the CA Intermediate program and was held twice a year in a computer-based format. In 2017, the CPE was replaced by the CA Foundation course, which introduced a new syllabus and pattern, but the acronym CPE remains familiar among commerce students and professionals who passed under the earlier system. The examination was known for its objective-type questions and was designed to assess basic proficiency before advancing to more rigorous levels of CA training. For students preparing for competitive professional courses, understanding the evolution from CPE to CA Foundation is important for historical context and exam strategy. Although no longer conducted, the CPE is often referenced in discussions about pre-2017 CA curriculum and remains a recognizable term in Indian accounting education.
