What is CLT?
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach to language education that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of learning a language. Originating in the 1970s, CLT shifted focus from grammar drills and translation to real‑world communication, enabling learners to use language meaningfully in various contexts. In India, CLT has been integrated into school curricula, teacher training programs, and competitive exams like CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) and NET (National Eligibility Test). It is widely used in ESL/EFL classrooms across the country, where teachers encourage pair work, role plays, and authentic tasks to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. CLT is particularly relevant in India’s multilingual education system because it helps students acquire English—a language critical for higher education and employment—through practical usage. The approach also supports the National Policy on Education’s goal of improving communicative competence.
