Community Health Volunteer
Full Form of CHV
What is CHV?
A Community Health Volunteer (CHV) is a trained individual who serves as a bridge between healthcare services and local communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas of India. CHVs play a vital role in the primary healthcare system by conducting health awareness campaigns, assisting in immunization drives, monitoring maternal and child health, and facilitating access to government health schemes like the National Health Mission. They are often part of programs such as ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) or similar volunteer networks. CHVs are deployed at the grassroots level, working closely with Anganwadi centers and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to ensure last-mile delivery of health services. Their work is especially critical in states with high maternal and infant mortality rates. For competitive exams like UPSC and state health department exams, understanding the CHV framework is important as it reflects India's approach to community-based healthcare and universal health coverage. The role has gained further prominence during disease outbreaks and pandemic response, where CHVs assisted in surveillance and contact tracing.
