Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Full Form of CDH
What is CDH?
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a birth defect where an abnormal opening in the diaphragm allows abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity, compressing the lungs and impairing their development. This condition occurs in approximately 1 in every 2,500 to 3,000 live births globally, and India reports a significant number of cases due to its large population. CDH is typically diagnosed during prenatal ultrasound or shortly after birth when the newborn experiences severe respiratory distress. In India, specialized neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and pediatric surgical centers in metropolitan cities manage CDH, though access to advanced treatments like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) remains limited. Management involves immediate stabilization, surgical repair of the diaphragm, and postoperative respiratory support. For students preparing for medical entrance exams like NEET PG or AIIMS, CDH is a high-yield topic in pediatrics and obstetrics, often appearing in questions about congenital anomalies and neonatal emergencies. Early detection and multidisciplinary care are critical for improving survival rates, which have risen to 70-80% in well-equipped centers. Awareness among parents and healthcare providers in rural India is gradually increasing through government health programs and NGO initiatives.
