Benzodiazepine
Full Form of BZO
What is BZO?
Benzodiazepine (BZO) refers to a class of psychoactive drugs primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and muscle spasms. In India, BZOs like diazepam, lorazepam, and clonazepam are commonly prescribed in hospitals and clinics for short-term management of acute conditions, though their long-term use is restricted due to dependency risks. They work by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter GABA, producing a calming effect on the brain. BZOs are used in emergency rooms for sedation before procedures, in psychiatric care for panic disorders, and in neurology for epilepsy. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 regulates their prescription and sale to prevent misuse. For medical students in India, understanding BZOs is essential for pharmacology exams like NEET PG, as they are frequently tested on their mechanism, side effects, and contraindications. Despite newer alternatives, BZOs remain a staple in Indian medical practice due to their efficacy and low cost. However, awareness of tolerance and withdrawal is critical for safe clinical use.
