Bachelor of Veterinary Science
Full Form of BVS
What is BVS?
Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVS) is an undergraduate degree program focused on veterinary medicine and animal health. Although the standard abbreviation in India is BVSc (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry), BVS is used informally in some academic and professional contexts. This five-and-a-half-year course includes classroom instruction, laboratory work, and clinical training in animal diseases, surgery, pharmacology, and public health. Graduates become qualified veterinarians who diagnose and treat illnesses in livestock, pets, and wildlife; work in animal husbandry departments; or serve in food safety and zoonotic disease control. In India, the degree is offered by state agricultural and veterinary universities, with admissions primarily through the NEET examination or ICAR AIEEA. The curriculum also covers sustainable animal production, dairy technology, and veterinary epidemiology. BVS holders can pursue postgraduate specializations such as Veterinary Pathology, Animal Nutrition, or Veterinary Microbiology, leading to careers in research, academia, or pharmaceutical industries. For Indian students aiming for government jobs in animal husbandry or veterinary services, this degree is a mandatory qualification. Additionally, BVS graduates can register with the Veterinary Council of India to practice legally. The demand for veterinary professionals has grown due to increased livestock farming, pet care awareness, and the need for animal disease surveillance. Thus, BVS remains a vital educational pathway for those interested in animal science and healthcare in India.
