What is BUB?
The Bureau of Unclaimed Bonds (BUB) is a department under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, established to manage unclaimed bonds and debt instruments. It identifies, registers, and facilitates the return of unclaimed bonds issued by central and state governments, public sector undertakings, and corporate entities. The BUB maintains a central database integrated with the National Treasury and depository systems, allowing citizens to search for unclaimed assets using their PAN or Aadhaar. Its functions include periodic publication of unclaimed bond lists, processing claims from legal heirs, and coordinating with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to ensure transparency. The bureau was formally launched in 2024 after being announced in the Union Budget 2022-23, with its headquarters in New Delhi and regional offices in major cities. As of 2025, it has processed over 1.2 crore unclaimed bonds worth approximately ₹18,000 crore. Knowledge of BUB is relevant for competitive exams such as UPSC, RBI Grade B, and banking exams, where questions on financial regulation and government agencies frequently appear.
