What is BSG?
The Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) is the national scouting and guiding organization in India, established in 1950 through the merger of the Boy Scouts Association (India Branch) and the All India Girl Guides Association. It is a voluntary, non-political educational movement for young people, aimed at developing character, citizenship, and physical fitness. BSG operates across India in schools, colleges, and communities, offering programs such as Cub Scouts, Scouts, Guides, Rover Scouts, and Ranger Guides. The organization is affiliated with the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Activities include camping, community service, environmental conservation, first aid training, and leadership development. Recognized by the Government of India, BSG plays a significant role in instilling values like discipline, teamwork, and patriotism among youth. Its historical and social relevance makes it a recurring topic in the general knowledge sections of competitive exams such as UPSC Civil Services, SSC, and state-level examinations. With a membership of over 2 million, BSG continues to contribute to nation-building by shaping responsible citizens.
