Bharat Rozgar Yojana
Full Form of BRY
What is BRY?
Bharat Rozgar Yojana (BRY) is a central government employment generation scheme launched in India during the early 1990s. It was designed to provide wage employment to unskilled and semi-skilled workers, particularly in rural areas, through public works projects. The scheme aimed to create sustainable community assets while addressing poverty and seasonal unemployment. BRY was one of the earlier flagship programs before the more comprehensive Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) came into force. It was implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development and operated through state governments and local panchayats. The acronym BRY is often referenced in comparative studies of Indian employment schemes, and it remains relevant for UPSC and state civil service examinations when discussing the evolution of rural employment policy. Though now subsumed under later programs, BRY set the foundation for contemporary rights-based employment guarantees in India.
