Biometric Information Record
Full Form of BIR
What is BIR?
A Biometric Information Record (BIR) is a digital or physical record that stores an individual's unique biometric data, including fingerprints, iris scans, and a facial photograph. In India, the BIR is most commonly associated with the Aadhaar program, managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). During Aadhaar enrollment, a resident's biometrics are captured and compiled into a BIR, which is then linked to their 12-digit Aadhaar number. This record serves as the foundation for identity verification across government and private services, enabling secure authentication for schemes like Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ration distribution, and banking. The BIR is also used in eKYC processes, allowing paperless verification. Its security is paramount, with strict encryption and access controls under the Aadhaar Act. For exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, understanding the BIR is essential as questions often cover biometric technology, data protection, and the Aadhaar ecosystem. The term is widely used in government notifications, policy documents, and technology discussions surrounding digital identity in India.
