Behavioral Event Interview
Full Form of BEI
What is BEI?
The Behavioral Event Interview (BEI) is a structured interview technique designed to assess a candidate's past behavior as a predictor of future performance. Rooted in the behavioral consistency theory, BEI focuses on specific situations, tasks, actions, and results (STAR method) that the interviewee has actually experienced. In India, BEI is widely adopted by corporate HR departments, consulting firms, and large multinationals during campus placements and lateral hiring. It is also a key component of assessment centers used by companies like Tata, Infosys, and HCL. The method helps recruiters evaluate competencies such as leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork without relying on hypothetical questions. BEI is frequently taught in Indian business schools (e.g., IIMs, XLRI) as part of the curriculum on talent acquisition. For government exams like UGC NET Management and MBA interviews, understanding BEI is crucial as it demonstrates modern recruitment practices. The technique is considered more valid than traditional interviews because it reduces social desirability bias and provides concrete examples. BEI sessions typically last 45–90 minutes and are often recorded for later evaluation. Its popularity in India has grown with the rise of data-driven HR practices.
