Bombay Engineer Group
Full Form of BEG
What is BEG?
The Bombay Engineer Group (BEG), also known as the Bombay Sappers, is a regiment of the Indian Army Corps of Engineers. Based at the BEG Centre in Pune, Maharashtra, it is one of the three engineer groups of the Indian Army, alongside the Madras Engineer Group (MEG) and the Bengal Engineer Group. The BEG is responsible for providing engineering support during military operations, including construction of bridges, roads, airfields, and defensive structures, as well as mine clearing and demolition tasks. Established in the 19th century, the regiment has a distinguished history of service in both world wars and post-independence conflicts such as the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan. In peacetime, it contributes to disaster relief and infrastructure development across India. The BEG is a common topic in defence examinations like the UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam and SSB interviews, where questions about army regiments and their roles are frequently asked. Aspirants should be familiar with the BEG's motto, 'Sarvatra' (Everywhere), and its affiliation with the Western Command.
